1. One number is 5 more than twice another number. The sum of the number is 35. Find the numbers

Let one number=N

The other number=35 - N

N-5 =2[35 - N]

N-5 =70 - 2N

3N = 75 divide both sides by 3

N=75/3

N=25 One of the numbers.

35 - 25 =10 The second number.

2. John was twice Bill's age in the year 2000. Their combined age in 2010 is 71. How old were John and Bill in 2000

Let Bill's age in 2000 =B

John's age in 2000 =2B

B+10+2B+10 =71

3B =71 - 20=51 divide both sides by 3

B= 51/3

B=17 Bill's age in 2000.

17x2=34 John's age in 2000.
