On a graph, the equation  y = x - 1  becomes a straight line that has a y-intercept of -1 (the point (0,-1)), and from there moves to the upper right at a 45° angle, through the points (1,0), (2,1), (3,2), ...

The equation  y = -x + 5  becomes a straight line that has a y-intercept of 5 (the point (0,5) ), and from there moves to the lower right at a -45° angle, through the points (1,4), (2,3), (3,2), ...
