what method do i use to work out what power of 10 i need for standard form.

for example i had 10800000 and i wanted to put it into standard form

I would get 1.08 X 10^7

what method can i use to work out what the power of 10 i need is

Put the decimal point after the first non-zero digit, then multiply by ten to the power of however many decimal places are needed to complete the number as in your example.  If the number is smaller than 10 then you will need a negative exponent on the ten.  For example:  0.0108 = 1.08*10^(-2)
