what rules are for finding the lengths of a right triangle?

a2 + b2 = c2  Where a and b are the two sides next to the right angle, and c is the longest side opposite the right angle (hypotenuse). If you want to find the length of side a or b, simply rearrange the formula...             a2 = c2 - b2  or  b2 = c2 - a2.
