The price of a theater ticket was $100.00 two decades ago. A report says that a theater ticket is now 350% of what it was 20 years ago, how much would it cost today? Express your answer rounded to the nearest cent.

350% =350/100 =3.5

(3.5 +1) x $100 =$450 of today's money.

$100 x (3.5) = $ 350.00

If it is 350% MORE than it was 20 years ago (the question does not ask this)  then  it is  100 + 100 (3.5) = 450.00

NO!!!.  Suppose the price had gone up by 50%, what would a $100 ticket cost today?

(50/100 +1) x $100 =$150. EXACTLY  the same principal applies for 350%!!!!!.

The question does not state it has gone up 350%  ...the wording says it is 350% of what it was...

That is why I answered the question the way I did.

"...A report says that a theater ticket is now 50% of what it was 20 years ago....'      the answer would be $50.

If it said it was 50% MORE than it was 20 years ago it would be $ 150

No!!. Anytime you see a % sign, you have to treat it consistently. If it said " the price is 3.5 times what it was", then you would be right. Proof: 350/100 - 1 =250% NOT 350% they state.

EP is correct.....the difference here is in the words  "of" and "more"

Consider......if the question had said the price was 100% of what it was....it would be exactly the same price  = $100

But...if the question had said the price is 100% more than what it was.......the price would have doubled = $ 200

Since the question uses "of"....consider

100% of  $100 =  $100

200% of  $100 =  $ 200

300% of $100  =  $ 300

So......350%  of $100  =  $350
