jane and peiling saved the same amount of money. after jane lent $42 to peiling, peiling had three times as much money as jane. how much did peiling have in the end?

Originally:  j = p     

 

Finally;   p + 42  = 3(j - 42)

 

Use the first in the second:  p + 42 =  3(p - 42)

 

Simplify:     p + 42 = 3p - 126    or  2p = 168   so  p = $84

 

That is the original amount that peiling had, so the final amount is 84+42 = $126
