Why must un-even numbers numbers be written as a fraction? Why can't we just use decimals?

You don't actually have to use fractions. You can use decimals all the time if you want, it is probably just what your math teacher prefers, and he/she may have a point. I personally find it easier to comprehend 3/17 rather than 0.1764705882352941.

I also find it easier to mulitply 3/17 by 5/17 rather than multiply 0.1764705882352941 by 0.2941176470588235 whether you're doing it by hand or via calculator.

In the end, both fractions and decimals have their strengths and weaknesses as representations of values, so try to use whichever one makes the problem easier (unless your teacher expects otherwise).

Which is easier to write?

\(0. \overline{012345679} \text {... or } \dfrac{1}{81}\)

Here are some un-even numbers that don't need a fraction to present them.

3,5,7,9 . . .  101,103 . . .  1001,1003

if you like decimal only numbers then use irrational numbers. The decimal continues forever . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . and ever . . . . . . . . . .

Example Pie   8.5397342226735671...

(Yes, "pie" not Pi just type it into the calc and you'll see).smiley
