Imagine a perfect square - like a 3 x 3 for example.  The area of this square is 9 because 3 x 3 equals 9.  So, now let's work backwards ... Let's say you know the area of a square and you need to find the side length.  This is where the square root symbols comes In handy.  The number under the radical represents the area.  So if you look at the first factor sq root of 9  - the answer is 3 (which represents the side length).  So .... The problem .... Sq rt of 9 X sq rt of 9 ... These 2 factors actually represent side length (3) x side length (3) and the answer is the area (9).

So ... The sq root of 9 X the sq rt of 9 = 9

          (Side) x (side) = (area)

* the same applies to your problem.  Hope this helps!
