will the sum of 2 linear expressions each with an x-term have always a x-term?

No. Here is one example of two linear expressions, each w/ an X-term, in which the sum has no X-term:

 

I: Y = 2X +3

II: Z = -2x +4

III: W = Y + Z = 7

 

We see that the X-terms cancel out.
