(X+3)(x-1)=4y+x^2+5 (X-3)(3x+2)=3x^2-14y+15 Is there a possible solution. Can't seem to find it.

There is not one equation Mathcad, there are 2.

When simplified Alan found them to be the equations of parallel lines.

That is why there can be no solutions.  The lines will never cross one another.

If you expand and rearrange the first equation you get  x - 2y = 4

If you expand and rearrange the second equation you get x - 2y = -3

Clearly, these are incompatible.  There is no solution!

Because you have one equation in 2 variables you can't solve this.(If you substitute and re-arrange these 3 expressions you will never be able to eliminate down to one variable.)

2 variables? Need 2 equations to solve.
