One television show that I have been watching since 2004, "The Biggest Loser" on NBC, is all about weigh loss.  At the end of each week, the contestants are weighed and their percentage of weight loss is calculated. The two contestants with the lowest percentage of weight loss goes up for elimination where the other contestants have to vote one of the two contestants up for elimination off.  When I see the contestant's percentange of weight loss, how is that calculated?  For example: before the weigh in. the contestant weighed 230 pounds and after being weighed the contestant weighs 220 pounds which wouqld be a weight loss of 10 pounds.  How do you calculate the percentage of weight loss?

There are several ways to do that:

1- (Take old weight - new weight) / old weight  X 100=% loss

2- 1 - (old weight/new weight)^-1  X 100=% loss

3- 1- (new weight/old weight) X 100=% loss

I think guest’s answer is mostly BS. If I turn that in as a answer my teacher would give me a D- for slop. That is his favorite word. hahaha

The first one look like he is saying to subtract it from one. ( I know he not mean it that way)

The other two are the same thing and you do have to subtract it from one. ( I know he say to do it)

I see that show a couple of times. If all they do is measure weight lost then they not very smart. Maybe they are fat heads. hahaha

If someone do a lot of exercise and lift weights or use weight machines then they will build muscle mass and lose fat.  Muscle weigh more than fat do for the same space. So a person might not lose as much weight as another person or might even gain weight but he lose a lot more fat. He might not win even though he in better shape.

Hi Dragonlance,

What you say is true BUT

The category for this show is entertainment NOT scientific education.

They can be as 'sloppy' as they want so long as they can get high ratings LOL

Life is too short to be taken so seriously.  :))
