if n=24 and s= 1.56 how do you determine variance?

We are left having to make some guesses, a consequence of your not having provided adequate information.

Can we guess that s is intended to be standard deviation of a normal distribution? In which case, all you need to do is google for the relationship between s (or the more standard σ symbol) and "variance".
