How is x , -3, for 7 = (-x) + 4? How can a number be negative negative?

If you subtract the 4 from both sides to solve for x, you get -x = 3. To finish solving for x, x must be positive (you don't want negative x, you want x), so you multiply both sides by -1 to get x = -3. A negative times a negative is a positive: -1 * -x = x. If you have negative one set of negative x units, you have x units in all.
