Q2.1   A.  Velocity is slope of x-t graph including sign.   Slope is most positive at P.  

Q2.2   C.  Speed is magnitude of slope of x-t graph (i.e. ignoring sign).  Slope has largest magnitude at R.

Q2.3   D.  Acceleration is slope of velocity-time graph (including sign).  Just before point S the velocity is large and negative; just after point S it is large and positive; therefore the change through S is from large negative to large positive velocities.  This change is positive and is larger at S than anywhere else.

For the middle question the answer is A.  The net force on the mass is in the positive x-direction and is constant (assuming static and moving friction are the same).  With a constant mass, this means the acceleration is constant.  

The psychologically misleading aspect of the question is that it is difficult to think in terms of acceleration; we are more inclined to see think in terms of velocity, so at first imagine the mass slowing down and then speeding up again.  It does this, of course, but we now have velocity in mind instead of acceleration.  Well, that's my excuse!!

Subtract 1 from both sides

y - 1  = (a-k)x   

Divide both sides by (a-k)

(y - 1) / (a-k)   =  x

The equation for vertical the vertical motion of the projectile is given by:

y = (1/2)(-9.8m/s²)*t^2 + v₀t       where y is the vertical displacement, t is the time and v₀ is the initial vertical velocity (in this case = 0)    If we consider the top of the building to be  y = 0, then the vertical displacement = -25.3m

So we have

-25.3m = (-4.9m/s²)*t^2  divide both sides by  (-4.9m/s²)

(-25.3m) /  (-4.9m/s²) =  t^2   take the positive root of both sides

t = about 2.27 sec

You need to rephrase this so that it makes sense.  

Another possibility is to simply subtract 81 from both sides. This gives

x^4 - 81 = 0     factor

(x^2 + 9) (x^2 - 9) = 0

If we set both factors = to 0, the first has no real solution. By factoring again, the second gives us

(x + 3) (x - 3) = 0

And the solutions are -3 and 3

Another way to look at it is this

I think in d of my little pics the acceleration is negative because the slope of the tangents are negative.

and decreasing (getting closer to 0, I suppose that is really increasing, how confusing) because the gradent of the tangents is becoming less steep with time, the curve is concave up.

so ignoring the sign is the gradient of the tangent steeper at P or R
