Whenever somebody posts an "answer" but doesn't show how that answer was derived, 

it's probably a troll telling a lie to mess you up.  Please don't take such postings seriously. 

People who legitimately want to help you will show how they got their answer. 

Five times a number is divided by 7 more than the original number. If the result is 12, then what was the original number?  

5x / (x + 7)  =  12  

5x  =  12 • (x + 7)  

5x  =  12x + 84  

–7x  =  84  

x  =  –12  

Check answer:   (5)(–12) / (–12 + 7)  =  12  

                                            –60 / –5  =  12  

                                             looks good

4 shows the remainder, because 100/8 is 12 remainder 4. However if you want a decimal answer, you have to keep going in the division. So you're gonna bring down another zero after the decimal point in the 100. (100 is the same as 100.0)

40 goes into 8 five times, so the five goes after the decimal point in the quotient. So that's why 100/8 is 12.5.
