You can only cancel x+3 from borh sides (i.e. divide both sides by x+3) as long as x+3 is not zero.  Here, x+3 turns out to be zero.

Fortuitously, you still get the right answer in this case!  However, performing mathematically illegal operations is not valid, whatever the apparent result. 

Let the amount of money she came to church with =a

2*a - $20,000 =b - for balance..........(1)

2*b - $20,000 =0...............................(2)

Solve for (1) and ( 2):

a = $15,000 - The amount she came to church with

Check: 2 * $15,000 - $20,000 =$10,000

             2 * $10,000 - $20,000 =$0

Use Pythagoras' theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse, then use the definitions of sin, cos and tan

i.e sin = opposite/hypotenuse

    cos = adjacent /hypotenuse

    tan = opposite/adjacent

ABC and DBE are similar triangles so  DB/AB = EB/CB

(10-x)/(10-x+x) = 3/(3+2)   or  (10 - x)/10 = 3/5 

Hence  10 - x = 30/5

            10 - x = 6

            x = 4

Here's another way of doing this for those who don't have a handy facility for factorising large numbers:

 Since f(x) is divisible by x^3, f(x) is of the form ax^5 + bx^4 + cx^3.

You then want ax^5 + bx^4 + cx^3 + 2 to be divisible by (x + 1)^3.  Using long division, you get the equations

-10a  + 6b - 3c = 0

4a - 3b + 2c = 0

-a + b - c + 2 = 0

==> a = 6, b = 16, c = 12

So f(x) = 6x^5 + 16x^4 + 12x^3.

Not sure why you say it is incorrect,

   if you solve as instructed:       x+1 = - (x+5)       you will find   x = -3    

                      I think YOU are incorrect...  thanx for not really  trying though !

Solve for x:
x^2 + 4 x + 3 = -(x + 3) (x + 5)

Expand out terms of the right hand side:
x^2 + 4 x + 3 = -x^2 - 8 x - 15

Add x^2 + 8 x + 15 to both sides:
2 x^2 + 12 x + 18 = 0

Divide both sides by 2:
x^2 + 6 x + 9 = 0

Write the left hand side as a square:
(x + 3)^2 = 0

Take the square root of both sides:
x + 3 = 0

Subtract 3 from both sides:

x = -3

Factor L side to   (x+3)(x+1)          then cancel   (x+3) from both sides of the equation and solve....   x+1 = - (x+5)

Well, if you want to do this the 'lazy' way, you can just eyeball it.

I'd say about a quarter of those are behind the 20 line, so your answer would be B, 106. :D
