During the school holidays, Chris read 312 pages of a book at first. He read the remaining pages in 20 days, with the same number of pages each day. During these 20 days, he read 1/12 of the book in 6 days. How many pages did he read in the 6 days?

6 : 1/12 = 20 : x          x = 5/18        (x => pages read in 20 days)

13/18 = 312 pages

Chris read 36 pages in 6 days, 120 pages in 20 days, and the book has 432 pages.

If you just guessed, using trial and error, that will not always work for you.

You need to know how to solve simultaneous equations formally.

6) The horizontal length of the ramp is 60 meters.

That can't be right.....THAT answer is longer than the hypotenuse !

Slope between the two points = m     =    (-7- -1)/ (4- -5) =  -6 / 9      

   perpindicular slope is - 1/m   = 9/6

y = 9/6 x   would be a perpindicular line

5) The farthest distance is 11 meters.

the 5 x^4    and the   c * 10 x^4    will need to cancel out and disappear

      so c must equal  - 1/2

b = 2h      is given

2 b   + h  = 4 hours     is  given      sub in the top equation

2 (2h) + h = 4

5h = 4

h = 4/5 hr    or  48 minutes

Andy and Marcus each bought the same storybook and both of them started reading their books on the same day. Marcus read 3 fewer pages than Andy each day. Marcus took 80 days to finish his storybook while Andy took 30 days fewer than him. Find the number of pages in the storybook.

Marcus => 80(x - 3)               Andy => 30x

80(x - 3) = 30x

x = 4.8       (The number of pages Andy read each day.)

Number of pages in a book=>   4.8 * 30 = 144 

Slope of l_1 is -3/4 so slope of l_2 is 4/3 which means l_2 is y=4/3x+b and we get 7 = -20/3+b so b = 41/3 which menans m+b=4/3+41/3 = 15.

x = number      x^2 = square of number

x^2 + x = 240

x^2 + x - 240 = 0

Use Quadratic formula with    a = 1    b=1    c = -240

\(x = {-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac} \over 2a}\)

and you will find  x = -16   or +15 (throw out...not even)

Check :  ( -16)^2 + -16 = 240        Check !

Can you edit this Q so it is readable?

f(7)=5

f(15)=7

-16+256=240 so it is -16.

(3x+4)(2x+5)=38 so 6x^2+23x+20=38 so 6x^2+23x-18=0 so x=2/3 and the width is 6.

Working backwards, we get that n = 2014.
