I have used what is called the 'Stars and Bars' method.

I get 200 ways

put the 3 apples in a row, they are the stars.  Use bars to divide them into 4 piles, you will need 3 bars

So you have 3 apples and 3 bars so there are  6C3 places to put the bars = 20 possible ways to distribute the apples

now put the 3 oranges in a row (the new stars) Us bars to divide them into  3 piles, you will need 2 bars.

So you have 5C2 = 10 ways to distribute them

20*10 = 200 ways

At present you have 2 litres of salt in 8 litres of water   which is 2/10 = 0.2 = 20% saline

I want to know how much water I need with 2 litres of salt to get  5% salinity

Let the TOTAL amount of solution be x litres

2/x = 0.05

2/0.05 = x

x=40 litres

But 2  we already have 10 litres of that so we need to add 30L of water.

In the FreeWheelin' Skate Shop, exactly 1/4 of the skateboards are red and exactly 2/3 of the scooters are red. If there are equal numbers of red skateboards and red scooters in the shop, what fraction of the total skateboards and scooters together are red?

The fraction is 4/11     (See diagram))

Similar triangles are tricky, especially with remembering which angles correspond to which angles. 

I always get them confused so when you do have the time, it's very nice to draw out the triangle so that they face the same way.

I find it quite difficult to get my head around geometry questions such as this.

So I will give you some insight as to how I go about it.

I drew the diagram and shade the smaller one.

then I said the smallest side of the big triangle is AC which corresponds to the smallest side of the small diagram AD

then I said the biggest side of the big triangle is AB which corresponds to the biggest side of the small diagram AC

Now I draw the corresponding triangles like this:

And then I take it from there.

I suppose it is too slow long term but while you are getting the hang of it it can help.

angle A = 48

angle C = 132 - x

Since ABC ~ ACD

angle B = angle ACD = x

angle C = angle CDA = 132 - x

Since BC = BD

BCD = BDC

BCD + BDC + B = 180 degrees

BDC + BDC + x = 180 degrees

BDC = (180-x)/2

CDA  + CDB = 180

132 - x + (180-x)/2 = 180

x = 28
