It's unusual - to me - because I don't remember one where we were asked to divide by something in the form of ax + b where "a" was something other than "1"

So....I had to actually factor out the "a" and divide the polynomial in the numerator by it before I could perform the synthetic division.....

50% of 7465764382746= 50/100 of 7465764382746= 1/2 of 7465764382746= 1/2*7465764382746.

Since multiplying by half is same as dividing 2, 7465764382746/2= 7465764382746/2 = 3732882191373

I have used synthaetic division before but if i remember rightly it can only be used when the divisor is a polynomial of degree one.

I can't much see the point of commiting such a limiting proceedure to memory.

I do understand that in this case you were expressely asked to use synthetic division.

Why is this one unusual?

I used Q to represent older because o is too easily confused with 0.

Q looks a bit like an O that is why I used it.

These types of questions are always much easier if you you letters that are relevant to the question.

I think Heureka's answer is very similarto mine.  He just misinterpreted the last little bit that was being asked for - a very easy error to make :)

Guest's answer is also very similar.  I think the way guest has assigned an easier to work with total is really good.  

It often makes it easier for people to think if there are less letters :)

Cphill and I have have gone around on this stuff a bit (he doesn't know it) ....but a lot of time you have to make ASSUMPTIONS which will justify your answers (because sometimes the posted questions are vague or unclear).......When I was in Engineering school......you only got partial credit (even if your answer was correct) if you didn't state the parameters or assumptions which led you to your conclusion/answer.......

Hope you go into STEM as you wnader on down the school road!    It is snowing here in CO......I just rode my bike home from the Hospital and am off for a few days.....I'm gonna go sit in the hot tub with a beer and watch it snow,,,,,
