Your model description is one of a simplistic system. The pen in question is not symmetrical in surface area or mass dispersion. It wasn't supposed to be criticism, most of them are not questions about mathematics is all I'm saying. 

1-16 are similar, Bree..we are just solving for different things in some of them.....here's a couple

1.   Interest = Principal * Rate *Time

      Interest =   1500 * .05 * 3  =  $225

5.    20  =   250 * r * 2

      20  =  500 * r       divide both sides by 500

      20/500 = r = .04   = 4%

10.   1440  = P *  .03 * 5

        1440 = P * .15      divide both sides by .15

        $ 9600  = P

(3x²+4x+8)+(2x²-6x+3)=5x²-2x+11

(5x²-2x+11)+y=9x²-2x-5

Solve algebraically. Subtract 5x² from both sides, add 2x to both sides, subtract 11 from both sides.

y=4x²-16

So, the equation needed is 4x²-16
