In math it usually means that when a value is put into a function, there is only one possible output. One value in produces one value out.

For example, think of the function y(x) = sin(x).  Whatever value of x we choose there is just one corresponding value of y.  If x = 45°, say, then y(45°) = 1/√2. One value in, one value out.

However, if we had the function y(x) = sin^-1(x),  then if x is 1/√2, there is more than one possible value for y - it could be 45° or 135° for example. One value in, more than one out.

take it by steps do it year by year for example i had a problem like this today alright lets say you had 1,000 dollars in the bank ok now one year at a time...so you start off with 25 percent intrest every year for four years you would end up with 1,025 dollars at the end of the first year and it countinues until you hit the fourth year same with this question..just start with 595 then add 5.5 percent of intrest every year for 4 years and you will get the answer.

We haven't been able to rightly determine that.......While true that at least SOME of the points on this line "lie," a recent polygraph has shown that, indeed, other points tend to tell the truth  - at least, most of the time. One should remember though, that "Poly Graph" evidence isn't  usually seen by the court system as being as reliable as "Cartesian Graph" evidence, so the jury is still out - so to speak......

Well.....excuse me now......I have to move on to an equally pressing problem of trying to determine the number of drops of water contained by the Pacific Ocean......my working hypothesis is that we can put them in a perfect one-to-one correspondence with the "lying" points on this line, but only for a short while......Global Warming will eventually win out and the Pacific will be bone-dry within 5 years......(If my calculations are correct!....)
