3*4 means 3 lots of  4 = 4 +4+4 = 12

3*0.5 means 3 lots of 0.5 = 0.5 + 0.5+0.5 = 1.5 = 1/2 of 3

so 

500*0.5 = 500 lots of 1/2 =  1/2 of 500 = 250

This question is really confusing me.    

My answer is also completely different from yours Alan so therefore it is bound to be wrong but maybe you can help clear up my confusion.  I do not understand the wording of the question at all. 

I don't get the 83atm 5000 m altitude - that is jsut for starters.

BUT

The atmospheric pressure decreases with height. Experimentally it is determined that the rate at which the pressure p decreases in function of the height h, is always proportional to p.

Write the differential equation that describes this model and solve general.

$$\\\frac{dP}{dh}=kP\\\\
P=e^{kh}\; +\; c\\\\
check\\
\frac{dP}{dh}=ke^{kh}=kP\qquad $That looks good$\\\\$$

Imagine then p = 1 atm at sea level and p = 0, at 83 atm 5000 m altitude.

When h=0 P=1       1=e^0+c      SO    c=1

$$P=e^{kh}+1$$

p=0  h = total confusion here   p=0, 83atm, 5000m altitude.

1x 7x 13x 19x 25x 31x 37x 43x 49=2*20+1*9     43 is the biggest that can not be packaged

What numbers are possible if r=2

2x 8x 14x 20=20*1       14 is the biggest but it is smaller than 43

What numbers are possible if r=3

3x 9=1*9                         3 is the biggest but it is smaller than 43

What numbers are possible if r=4

4x 10x 16x 22x 28x 34x 40=2*20        34 is the biggest but it is smaller than 43

What numbers are possible if r=5

5x 11x 17x 23x 29=1*20+1*9             23 is the biggest but it is smaller than 43

so

43 is the biggest number that can not be packaged!
