Two circles, each with radii 900, are tangent to each other and they are both tangent to a line. Find the radius of the circle which is tangent to both circles and also the line.

The closest I could get is:

Square side:  a = 3

Rectangle sides:   a = .8   and  b = 3

Therefore, the area of a rectangle is  2.4 units²

^{If the angles are 30° , 60° and 90° , it should work with any size of a square.}

The probability = 181 / 216

So....the area of one of the trapezoids =  (1/2) (S/√2) ( S + (1 + √2) S)  =

(√2/4) ( 2 + √2)S^2  =

(1/4) (2 + 2√2)S^2  =

(1/2) (  1 + √2)S^2

So  the two trapezoids  have an  area  of  ( 1 + √2)S^2 =  the yellow area

And the area of the blue rectangle =   S  * Base of the trapezoid =

S *  (1 + √2)S  =  (1 + √2)S^2

So.....the  yellow and blue areas are equal  !!!!

And let another of the quarter circles have the equation of (x - 20)^2 + y^2  =400

The x coordinate of the  intersection of these circles  = 10

So  the x coordinate of E   = 10

So...using the equation of the circle we can find the y  coordinate as

10^2 + y^2  =400

100 + y^2 = 400

y^2 = 300

y = 10√3

So  IE = the distance between I and E =   10√3 - 10   = 10 (√3 -1)

And by symmetry....this equals IF

So triangle  EIF is right and its area =   (1/2)(IE)(IF) = (1/2) [ 10 (√3 -1)]^2  =

50 (3 - 2√3 + 1)  = [200 - 100√3]units^2      (1)

And the area between sector AEF  and triangle AEF  =

CP /   3 =  (CP + 8) /  5       cross-multiply

5CP  = 3 (CP + 8)

5CP  = 3CP + 24

2CP  =24    divide both sides by 2

CP = 12

a) There is a circle propery that just says that the 2 tangential distances from an external point to a circle are equal.

Using this   AM=AP   and   BM=PM

so    AM=MB 

so if M is on AB it follows that M is the midpoint of AB

I haven't done the other 2. They would take more effort on my part.  Are you happy with my part A?
