To clean it you do, however, you can always take it to professionals and have them do it for you...it is safer but as long as you're careful and follow the steps in the links, then all should be fine...
Basically, don't touch and move things around unless specified.
I am scared.
Do I HAVE to open it?
The fan prevents your computer from overheating [when it's filled with dust, the fan will not function as it should thereby overheating and possibly damaging other parts]...depends on many factors like air circulation, where you live [whether it is cold or warm or hot], where you sit and if you're laptop is on a hard surface or soft one.
Thanks. why is the cooling fan so important?

Okay. Before, the fan just stayed on when the computer worked.
Now, it only turns on and off in 2 seconds.
Will ask my parents to do it.
Can you show me an image of how to clean it please?
Yes, for some it is the circle area. Yes, UNPLUG, I accidentally wrote plugged but edited it shortly after...always unplug whenever you are cleaning the computer.
Umm, I am confused...Do I do it unplugged, or do I do it plugged?
On the front rear, does the fan look like a circle?
Unplugged* Very important.
You need Phillips screwdrivers to unscrew the area...but first, try spraying at an angle at the fan vents without opening anything. Just make sure everything is unplugged. Then, you can reconnect, start the computer and see if the screen appears. If not, then open the computer and clean the fan.
It still won't turn on!
I mean the computer so I can clean the fan.
How do I take it apart?
Oh, yes, very likely it is if you don't feel it anywhere else.
I feel air in the rear. Is it the fan?
Thanks, AzizHusain.
Stu, go to this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lqg5wQpkK14
This might help.
The fan should be either on the left or right side [basically it looks like a cage with parallel bars]. When you turn your computer on, the area where you feel air is the fan.
Where's the fan???
Stu, you should try the same things as DS and see if it starts working.
Or, you could take it into a computer repair store and they could recover the hard drive and material.
Um...Where's the fan?...Thanks, Stu and AzizHuasin...
My computer played uo and busted last night. Yet another set back. It was the only thing i coukd focus on. For a while it was 20 min bot times. Now it needs a cd start to refresh or rest. What is the chance i will loose everything?
Hmm, time to clean some dust out...unplug everything [battery, adapter, anything else connected with wires], and start spraying near the fan at an angle and not directly into it with quick bursts.
Okay. No sounds.
Only when it shut down it did like a noise like the level noise going down.
I think that it was a whistling sound.
It still won't turn on after 2 times.
