I don't know how to solve for the smaller circle, but maybe we can first find the area of the blue region without the circle, that would be the area of the square - the circle, so the area of the square is (5*2)^2, since the radius is 5, the Diameter is 10 which is the side of the square, 100 is the area. then the circle is (pi)(r)^2, the radius is 5 so (pi)(25), 100-25pi, then divided by 4 because 4 regions is 25-25/4(pi), sorry idk how to solve the area of smaller circle but that's the idea, maybe Cphill or somebody wil give a splendid answer.

Let us simplify the guests answer, first expand the equation to get

5u+12u-18=-3u-27+20u+? = 17u-18=17u-27+?, subtract 17u so that -18=-27+?, add 27 to both sides so that

The sum of the roots  =  a  + a^2  =  2

So  rearranging , we have

a^2 + a  - 2  =  0      factor

(a + 2) ( a - 1)  = 0

Setting each factor to  0  and solving for a produces  a =  -2    or  a  = 1

So  a^2  =  4      or   a^2    = 1

And the product of the roots = -k

So....the roots must  be   - 2  , 4   and    - k  = -8

If we drew another median from A to BC....it would  divide this triangle into 2 triangles with equal areas.....so   the area of one of these  triangles  =12

So  [ ABC]  =  6 * 12    = 72

No, I'm just stuck on a workbook problem, and i'm bored since i finished all the other ones, and i want to learn from this one.

The hypotenuse  = 25

The   altitude length is    product of the legs  /hypotenuse = 15 *20 / 25 =  12

 The other leg  of  the right triangle in the  upper left of the figure  is 9

So...the area of this triangle  = (1/2) (product of the legs)  (1/2(9 *12)  = 54

And we can find the radius, R, of the inscribed circle as follows

54  =  (1/2) ( 9 + 12 + 15)  R

54 =  18  R

R  =  3

Similarly the  larger right triangle is a 12 - 16 - 20 right triangle

Its area  =  (1/2) (12 * 16)  =  96

And we can find the radius, R,  of the inscribed circle in this triangle as

96=  (1/2)  (12 + 16 + 20 ) R

96  = 24 R 

R = 4

The distance  between the  centers  = 3 + 4  =  7
