OK, we have a mixed fraction that we must turn into an inproper fraction. We know that:

1 = 1/1

We have to make common denominators:

1 2/3 = 3/3 +2/3 = 5/3

So we get:

(5/3) : (35/6)

[Here we could have used the formula a b/c = (ac +b)/c to save time]

To divide by a fraction is the same as to multiply with the inverse:

(5/3) : (35/6) = (5/3) * (6/35) 

Multiply numerator by numerator, and denominator by denominator:

(5/3) * (6/35) = 30/105

We see that both the numerator and denominator has 5 as a divisor. Divide both the numerator and the denominator by 5:

Since the function is secant and secant = 1 / cosine, the period of secant will be the same as the period of cosine.

In a function like  f(x) = cos( at )  (where t is the variable and a is a constant), the period of that function is found using:  period  =  2π / a.

In your problem, the value for a = π/5, so the period will be (2π) / (π/5).

     2π ÷ (π/5)   =   2π · (5/π)   =   10 seconds, 

which agrees with the problem that says "it completes one rotation every 10 seconds."

"dms" means "degrees, minutes, and seconds".

There are 60 minutes in each degree and 60 seconds in each minute.

18.75°  means that you hae 18 full degrees plus another .75 of a degree.

Since there are 60 miutes in a degree, .75° can be changed into minutes by:  .75 x 60  =  45 minutes.

18.75°  =  18 degrees and 45 minutes  =  18° 45'

Since it came out to 45 minutes without any remaining decimal, we don't have to change the remaining decimal part into seconds. If there were a remaining decimal, multiply that decimal times 60 to get seconds.

This is an interesting question.

It says that each patient needs individual care. So this means one nurse can't care for multiple patients.

Let's first find out how many patients a nurse can care for on their shift.

If they work for 12 hours, and each patient needs 4 hours of care, that they can care for 12/4, or 3 patients on their shift.

I'm thinking you can't have a nurse work back-to-back shifts and thus care for 6 patients in a 24 hour period. If you could do this you would get a different answer.

Anyway, if one nurse can care for 3 patients and there are 17 patients, that means that 17/3 tells us how many nurses we need.

$$\frac{17}{3} = 5\frac{2}{3}$$

Of course, you can't have a 2/3 ofa  nurse, so you would round up and need 6 nurses.

Now, squaring:  1 / (25)  =  1 / 25.

Generally, if you find the root first, you will be working with smaller numbers.

Why doesn't what work?

First, remove the parentheses by using the distributive property:

     2(y - 7)  =  2·y - 2·7   =   2y - 14

     6(y + 1)  =  6·y + 6·1  =  6y + 6

7y - 2(y - 7)  =  6(y + 1) - 4

7y - [2y - 14]  =  [6y + 1] - 4

7y - 2y + 14  =  6y + 6 - 4             Simplify each side:

       5y + 14  =  6y + 2                   Get all the y-terms to one side by subtracting 5y from both sides:

  5y - 5y + 14  =  6y - 5y + 2          Simplify each side:

                14  =  y + 2                   Subtract 2 from both sides:

Check the answer:  7(12) - 2(12 - 7)  =  7(12) - 2(5)  =  84 - 10  =  74
