no, the surface area of a cylinder is
A= 2(pi) r(squared) +h (2(pi) r)
the first term is the area of the top and bottom together
the second term is the area of the side
to get the area of the side you mulitply height by circumference
circumference is 2 pi r

That is exactly what I wanted. A way to reduce and organize this seemingly complicated idea/requirement into something as clear and workable as an algebra formula. Due to your explanation of the logic I am now fully satisfied and convinced. Thanks for taking the time to solve this and explain it.

shirlsharrah:
how much tax would be on 113.98 at 9%
113.98 X 0.9 = 9% so, when you get that 9% do:
113.98 + 9%
for short -> 113.98 + (113.98 x 0.9)

If:
y = Y then 3=(1/4)(x)(2);
dividing both sides by 1/4 give us 12=(x)(2);
then divide both sides by 2 and 6=x.

535.23 + 97.83 - 299.98 -40.00 = current balance
She starts with 535.23 and then adds 97.83 by depositing a check. Then she writes a check to someone for 299.98, which subtracts that from her account. and finally she withdraws 40.00.
535.23 +97.83 - 299.98 - 40.00 = X
633.06 - 299.98 - 40.00=X
333.08 - 40.00 =X
X = 293.08

196.97 grams of gold in a mole
26.6g Gold / 1 = 1 mole gold / 196.97g Gold
26.6g/196.97g = Moles of gold
The answer is 1.34 moles Gold. Hope it helps! ^_^

If he had meant "x + 17,42% = 4697", then x would be 4696,8258.

You should just write the symbol for pi instead of trying to approximate with a number, because your answer will be more precise.
For example, the area of circle is pi*r^2. Therefore, if the radius is 4, you should just write 16(pi), instead of approximating to 50 (or even 50,26548245743669.)

3.14 is the rounded one. 3.14159265359 is more specific. ^_^

Yeah, that's the problem I'm having. I'll re-check my equation and see if I set it up right.
