That is true anon, but why don't we try to do it more formally.  

2x - 1 > 3

add one to both sides

then

divide both sides by 2        

We have

L (L-5) = 300  simplify

L^2 - 5L= 300

L^2 - 5L - 300 = 0   factor, if possible

(L  -20) (L + 15) = 0        so ..  setting the factors to 0, we have that L = 20 and L = -15

Reject the -15

So

L = 20

And the width is 5 less  = 15

The technique is identical! 

well first you need to get rid of the decimal.

3.2/1 is correct, but not acceptable so multiply both sides by five

3.2*5 =16
1*5=5

16/5 = 3.2 and theres you goes

i multiplied by five because i know some decimals offhand but usually you can just multiply by 10

3.2*10 = 32
(32/2 =16, 10/2=5)
32/10 simplifies into 16/5

a^2 = 20   take the square root of both sides [there will be two answers]

a = ±√20  = ±√(4 * 5) = ±(√4 * √5)  = ±2√5

Suppose we had

3/12 = 1/4

To cross-multiply......I take the 3 in the numerator of the first fraction and multiply it by the denominator of the other fraction, 4.  This gives me 12.

Then......I take the denominator of the first fraction, 12, and multiply it by the numerator of the second fraction, 1. This again gives me 12.

This is a good way to check to see if two ratios (fractions, in this case) are equal. If so, their cross-products are equal.

9P^2 - 16Q^2   this is a difference of two squares...to factor it, take the square root of both terms

Write them once separated by a plus and once separated by a minus

(3p + 4Q) (3P - 4Q)      and there you go

I just subtracted random numbers from 69 and then multiplyed them with the difference.

I finally got 45 and 24

Basically you just have to do guess and check

It is a tricky way of finding a gradient to a tangent of  a curve.  😆

Now put that into a proportion

Cross multiply

Well the square root of a number is a number multiplied by itself.

Perfect Squares

Also, most of the time they'll have you figure out perfect squares. Perfect squares are when a number has a square root that is a whole number. I have listed some below :

√0 = 0

√1 = 1

√4 = 2

√9 = 3

√16 = 4

√25 = 5

√36 = 6

√49 = 7

√64 = 8

√81 = 9

√100 = 10

And so on

Non Perfect Squares

If you are trying to find the square root of for example 51, find the two consecutive numbers that when they are squared, 51 is in the middle (in this case they are 7 and 8). So 7 squared is 49, and 8 squared is 64, right? 51 is 2 away from 49, while 51 is 13 away from 64. So, you estimate. Most teacher will take 7.1 or 7.2 I believe. This part might be confusing, but you will understand after you practice it a few times.

Example:

√95

√81 = 9 and √100 = 10

95 is 14 away from 81 and 5 away from 100

My estimate is 9.7

But your teacher may accept 9.6 too
