It helps if you know that a km is shorter than a mile.

the conversion is approx     5/8   

If you are going from miles to km the answer has to get bigger so you mult by   8/5

 and if you are going from km to miles the answer has to get smaller so you multiply by 5/8     

Rosala, it is very easy to get confused with this stuff.

Remember, fractional indices are roots AND roots are NOT the same as dividing.
