I'm not absolutly sure, but I think it's done like this:
a(x+y-z)
= a*x+a*y-a*z
= ax+ay-az
I think that's the answer.

Looks like the n'th term is given by -7 + 3(n - 1)
So the 79'th term is -7 + 3*78 = 227
