Let us find the square root of eg 266,256...split this into pairs 26 62 56

               ..   )26'62'56( *5 1 6     The sq rt of 26 is *5+1    We put 25 under the 26 subtract leaving 1 ..  .."..................25.               Bring down the 62 = 162

".               10) 162.         now double the answer *5=10 we now need a number which when put after the 10 and multiplied by the same number in this case 1= 101x1 subtract from 162 = 61 bring down the 56

...............101)..101.

                102)   61.             so we now have 6156 we double the result so far (*51)=102 apply the same as before adding a number which when put next to the 101 and multiplied by the same number which is nearest to 5156 in this case it is 6,,,,we have 1026x6=6156. So the answer to the square root of 266256 = 516

When using this method it is important to split the original number in pairs STARTING from the decimal point ie if the number is eg  23456.000the split would be  2'34'56 so the first calculation would be the nearest square root of 2 = *1 subtract from the 2=1and the next calculation would be double the *1=2 bring down the 34 =134..the number added to the 2 and multiplied using the same number which is 5 so we have 25x5=125 subtract from 134 =9 .bring down 56 =956 double answer so far (*15)=30 find the number when added and multiplied is nearest to 956 which is 3 ie 303 x3=909 leaving 47 bring down 00 giving 4700 ..double *153=306 the next number is 1= 3061 deduct from 4700 etc etc

All of this seems complicated ,but try it .
