A very good answer mjohnson. Thank you.

Now I'll look at your answer GoldenLeaf.
$${\mathtt{\,-\,}}\left({\mathtt{4}}{\mathtt{\,\times\,}}{\mathtt{y}}\right) = {\mathtt{\,-\,}}{\mathtt{3}}{\mathtt{\,\times\,}}{\mathtt{x}}{\mathtt{\,\small\textbf+\,}}{\mathtt{1}}$$
The next line that you wrote is not correct!
$${\mathtt{y}} = {\frac{{\mathtt{3}}}{{\mathtt{4}}}}{\mathtt{\,\times\,}}{\mathtt{x}}{\mathtt{\,-\,}}{\frac{{\mathtt{1}}}{{\mathtt{4}}}}$$ XXXXX You don't subtract a quarter: you divide by -4!
Like this!
$$\begin{array}{rll}
-(4\times y)&=&-3x+1\\\\
-4y&=&-3x+1\\\\
\dfrac{-4y}{-4}&=&\dfrac{-3x+1}{-4}\\\\
y&=&\dfrac{-3x+1}{-4}\\\\
y&=&\dfrac{3x-1}{4}\\\\
\end{array}$$
