If you have a term with a fractional exponent, you'll actually rewrite as a radical where the denominator becomes the root you're taking and the numerator accompanies the base inside the radix (the radix is just the square root symbol). For example, if you have 5^(3/2), you would rewrite as the square root of 5^3 (notice how 2, the denominator, becomes the outside part, and 3, the numerator, comes along with 5 inside). If you have 6^(7/3), you would rewrite as the cubed root of 6^7. (same thing here. The 3 moves to the outside to become the cubed root, and 7 becomes the exponent for 6 on the inside).
