a=log(sqrt(10)) = 1/2

b=log(sqrt(10)+1) = 

c=log(sqrt(10)+2)

then

    $$WRONG\qquad b^2=log(\sqrt{10}+1)^2=2log(\sqrt{10}+1)\qquad WRONG$$      

As Alan has pointed out -

this previous answer is incorrect, question is not of the from log(x²) it is (log x)² so it should be 

$$b^2=[log(\sqrt{10}+1)]^2 \approx 0.38357$$ 

$$ac=\frac{log(\sqrt{10}+2)}{2}$$

Hi everyone,

It was a really quiet day today which is great.  Core members had time just to have some fun with some of the posts.  There were of course some really good answers.  these were supplied by Reinout-g, CPhill, Rosala, Problem, NinjaDevo, Alan, Bertie and SquareRoot.  Thank you, you are all wonderful.

Radix's status has been elevated to moderator.  Congratulations Radix!

Many of you are now thinking "Who is Radix?"  

Radix has never posted on our site, he posts on the German site and has now been made moderator.

This site runs the Web2 calc and forums in German, Spanish, French, English and Russian.
If you go to the bottom of any page you will see 5 two letter abbreviations. EN stands for English that is our version. DE stands for Deutsch which means German in German. Click on that and you will be transferred to the German site. That is where Radix hangs out. You will be logged out but you can log into the German site or you can came back here and log on again.  Of course you can visit the other language sites as well.  I used to post occasionally on the other sites but it is too busy here now.  I have already voiced my congratulations on the German site and Radix has sent me a message of thanks.

There were not many posts today.  I seem to have put aside the whole lot for this wrap lol.

A sign that men of mathematics can indeed lack logic.  Perhaps this notation was cemented after an evening of celebration?  Perhaps a little liquid logic had been poured forth.   What think you my good Doctor?   I see that thou have a problem with the spelling of thine name.  Perhaps thou too have had a toddy or two?

Hmm.  I make reinout's expression to be ₅C₂√( 1 - (-1) - 2*(-1) ) = 10*√4 = 10*2 = 20. 

20 is 20 however heavily disguised!

Looks like the distance, r, is 14 (not quite sure as my old eyes have difficulty reading the light blue numbers!).

The new coordinates would be (x', y') = (x+r*cos(θ), y+r*sin(θ)) where θ is the angle made by the blue line with the x-axis.

The convention in mathematics (as opposed to computer software) is that sinⁿx (and cosⁿx etc.) is usually the same as (sinx)ⁿ.

There is one exception, and that's when n = -1.  So sin^-1x is not the same as (sinx)^-1.

sin^-1x is the inverse function arcsine (or asin).  It is the angle whose sine is x.  

I don't know what genius decided this should be the case, but it's led to confusion for millions down the years!!

+2 and -1 work. so I am goiing to split up 1u into 2u-1u

2u(u+1)-1(u+1)=0\\\\
(2u-1)(u+1)=0\\\\
u=0.5\qquad or\qquad u=-1$$

so

sinx = 1/2 or sinx=-1

etc

And besides, why can't you put several in the oven at the same time?  The bake time would be in parallel not in series!
