mari379, your "technique" will work if we're given the answers, beforehand.....!!!!

But, what if we don't have those???

Let's see how to solve this....step by step...

(x+4)/2=7       multiply both sides by 2

x + 4  = 14      subtract 4 from both sides

x = 10

In upper level maths....you have to be able to solve "without the answers"........also, "plugging" in the answers takes too much time in a test situation !!!!

The answer is the second option which says " Subtract 6 from both sides and then divide by 2. The solution is x = 8."

Now out here im showing you how to solve the equation which matches the statements of how to solve it!

2x+6=22

2x=22-6 9now subtract them both)

2x=16  (now divide 16 by 2 to get x)

x=16/2 

x=8  ANSWER

so thats why the answer is the second statement!

No.....we're not "distributing" anything, are we???

Look at this, again........

"Commutative" means "changing the order of things"........did we do that??? Nope...

"Transitive" is  something like this.......a=b ......b=c......so......a=c......did we do that??

So w'd solve this like!

$$2(x+1)+4=8$$  9 now we will multiply 2 by x and 1)

$$2x+2+4=8$$ ( now we'll simply add 2 and 4)

$$2x+6=8$$  ( now we will subtract 6 from 8)

$$2x=8-6$$

$$2x=2$$  (now we'll devide 2 by 2 to get x)

$$x=2/2$$

$$x=1$$  $$ANSWER$$

i dont really get how to do it. i just subsitute the numbers to see which one makes sense and i got 10

(10+4)/2=7

add 10+4 then divide it by 2 and it =7

14/2=7

the problem is (x+4)/2=7

it is distributive property!

How would we find out if the answer is -8, or not ????

Hint:   If we "plugged" it into the equation, and it made sense.....would that be a possibility  ???

BTW....just plugging in answers isn't always going to work......sometimes, the answers won't always be presented to you beforehand !!!

You need to explain WHY you think it is 6.

 The whole idea is to teach people or to help people to learn. 

The answer alone is probably not helpful.

5c - c + 10  = 34      combine like terms on the left

4c + 10 = 34        subtract 10 from both sides

4c = 24                divide both sides by 4

c = 6
