So judging from your graph Allen, I'm going to say that $$f(x)=[[x]]$$ is not continuous anywhere, since you have to lift your pencil to draw the graph. Am I right or wrong?

Alan, that is a really good explanation.  But most students would not know how to factorise this quadratic.

I have a method that I will go through but I am wondering how you do it?

$$\\15a^2+4a-3=0\\\\
$You need to find two numbers that multiply to 15*-3=-45$\\
$and add to +4$\\
$Since they multiply to a negative one is $ + $ and the other is $ - \\
$I can see straight off that they are +9 and -5$\\
$Now you split 4a up into -5a+9a $\\\\
15a^2+-5a+9a-3=0\\
15a^2-5a \quad +9a-3=0\\
$Now factorise the pairs$\\
5a(3a-1)+3(3a-1)=0\\
$this factorises to$\\
(5a+3)(3a-1)=0$$

Some new ideas on continuous functions and floor notation.  (Thanks Alan, Chilledznon and Melody)

15a² - 3a = 3 - 7a

Add 7a to both sides

15a² + 4a = 3

Subtract 3 from both sides

15a² + 4a - 3 = 0

This factorizes nicely:

(3a - 1)*(5a + 3) = 0

So a = 1/3  and a = -3/5

It isn't never ending but it has 607 decimal digits. Here they are

I've taken this notation to mean the nearest integer that is greater than or equal to x.

e.g. if x = 2.1 then [[x]] = 3

if x = 1 then [[x]] = 1 

if x = -1.5 then [[x]] = -1

Area=7(x+3)     units squared

I may be wrong but I think lateral area is the area of only 4 sides.  The top and bottom don't count.

You can google it and find out if I am correct.

I'm sorry I have not seen questions like these before.

I do not know the notation [[x]]       It is a mystery to me?

The volume of a cube of side length L is L³, so L = ³√216 = 6 cm

The area of one face of the cube is L² =36 cm²

You can work out the total area of all the faces from that.
