Let's call the original volume V_o ......... and let's call the new volume V_n 

And V_o  = s³  = V_n + 169    where s is the original side length

Note that, if .5 cm is shaved off each face, then each side is now just (s-1)cm long......so we have...

V_n = (s - 1)³ =  s³ - 3s² + 3s - 1       and substituting V_n + 169 for s³   we have

V_n = [ V_n + 169] - 3s² + 3s - 1      and subtracting V_n  from both sides and rearranging, we have

3s² - 3s - 168  = 0     divide both sides by 3

s² - s - 56 = 0   factor this

(s - 8)(s +7) = 0   so, s = 8   or  s = -7     (reject the negative answer)

 So, s = 8  and that's the original side length

So the new side length = (s - 1) = (8 - 1 )  = 7 .....  and the new volume is 7³ = 343cm³

Note that the original volume = 8³ = 512cm³

And 512cm³ - 343cm³ = 169cm³   .....and that's the difference between the old volume and the new volume !!!

You are probably correct Quinn but I do not understand this question.  

NOTE:   On the forum calc    tan^-1 is    atan

inverse tan is the same as arc tan!

n+12/6=n+2

Plug it into the calculator to see what I mean

Sin^2x + Cos^2x = 1

that is a good question why don't we square sinx+cosx and see what happens.  

$$\\(Sinx + Cosx)^2 \\\\
=sin^2x+cos^2x+2sinxcosx\\\\
=1+2sinxcosx$$

So

$$\\(sinx+cosx)^2=1+2sinxcosx\\\\
$Taking the square root of both sides we get $\\\\
sinx+cosx=\pm\sqrt{1+2sinxcosx}$$

It can only equal one if   2sinxcosx=0       and that doesn't happen very often.

I do want to point out that the web2 calc does not have a sin^-1 button.  It has an asin button.

arc sine is the same  as inverse sine.

You'll have to know how much each cargo box weighs. 

The heavier the cargo boxes, the fewer you can carry with you.

√(x²+y²) ≠ x + y       (Except for rare cases.)

For instance: √(3²+4²) = √(9+16) = √25 = 5

But: if √(x²+y²) = x + y, then √(3²+4²) would equal 3 + 4 = 7 (which it doesn't).

Since 1 percent is 0.01, one-half percent is 0.005.

Let x be the interest rate of the $1000 investment; then x + 0.005 will be the interest rate of the $2000 investment.

Formula: (Amount Invested)(Interest Rate) + (Amount Invested)(Interest Rate) = (Interest Earned) 

     (1000)(x) + (2000)(x+0.005) = 160

     1000x + 2000x + 10 = 160

      3000x + 10 = 160

      3000x = 150

      x = 150 / 3000

      x = 0.05    ---> The $1000 is invested at 5%.

Check: ($1000)(0.05) + ($2000)(0.055) = $50 + $110 = $160

Also, I'm assuming that 3.9 x 1011 trees means 3.9 x 10^11.

Multiply the two values: (2.6 x 10^2) x (3.9 x 10^11)

                          = (2.6 x 3.9) x (10^2 x 10^11)            Multiply the numbers; add the exponents.

                          = 10.14 x 10^13        

                          = 1.0 x 10^14                                     Round to one decimal.
