Everyone has a different answer that they seek for. My answer is that we need math because it is important. We might not think so that it is just a waste of time and that it's pointless, which could be true but then again we wouldn't be as far as we are today and we wouldn't know our age ,how much we have in savings, how many things we have personally and so forth.

how is the sqrt(2/2)/sqrt(2/2), 1?
Anything divided by itself is 1 (except for 0) you can't divide by 0.

If someone deposits $4650 in a bank that gives 3% interest compound annually, how much money will that person have after 8 years?
"Alternate routes" as the right idea.
S = P * (1 + i )
n
where S is the future value
P is the principle which is the initial value = $4650
i is the interest rate in the compounding period (written as a fracion) = 0.03
n is the number of compounding period = 8

if $516 yeilds $58 in simple interestover 6 years, what is the annual rate
P=principle=$516
I = Interest = $58
t = time = 6 years
r = rate (as a decimal)
I=Prt
58 = 516 * r * 6
58/(516*6) = r
r = 0.01873385
r = 1.873385 %

First give the unknown a pronumeral. I chose N
Multiply both sides by 12 to get rid of the fraction.
Take all the x terms to one side and the non-x terms on the other side.
Factorise out the x
Divide both sides by what ever was in front of the x (the co-efficent of x)
Now you have x = a fraction with an N on the top and an N on the bottom (along with other stuff)
This can only have a solution if the denominator (bottom) is not equal to 0
forget about the top and put the bottom = 0
solve this new equation
You'll get N= something
That something is what N cannot equal if the original equation is to have a solution.

let it be x% of 30
so,
x/100 of 30 should give 114
(x/100)*30 = 114
x= 114*100/30
x=480
so 114 is 480% of 30

How do I convert a mixed number to a fraction?
Say we use 2 and 3/4
Draw some circles to represent cakes.
Now cut them all into quarters.
lightly colour 2 and 3/4 cakes.
How many quarters have you coloured? If you did it correctly the answer is 11. So you have 11 quarters OR 11/4
so 2 and 3/4 = 11/4
Without a picture you would say (2*4 +3)/4 => (8+3)/4 => 11/4

mthmn wrote:What two numbers add to -20 and when multiplied equal -100?
Let the 2 numbers be x and y
x+y=-20
xy=-100 => y= -100/x Substitute this back into the first equation
x + -100/x = -20
multiply both sides by x
x^2 - 100 = -20x
now take it all to one side and sovle it as a quadratic equation.

THERE ARE 8 SWITCHES 2 ARE DEFECTIVE, IF I SELECT 2 SWITCHES AT RANDOM AND TEST THEM. WHAT IS THE PROBABLITY THE SECOND SWITCH IS DEFECTIVE GIVEN THAT THE FIRST IS DEFECTIVE
Well, there are 7 swiches left and one is faulty so probability that the next one is defective is 1/7

First you would take 4650 and then multiply it by (3/100). it would look like: 4650 * (3/100).Then you take the answer to that, which is $139.50, which is the annual interest, and multiply that by 8 because that's how many years it specified. that should bring you at $1116, and then add it to the original sum, since it asked you his total amount of money, which will give you your answer of 5766.

This has several routes you can take to solve it but I will give you the one I prefer.
The first year you will get 3% of the 4650......(4650/100)*3=139.50
The 2nd year is 3% of the new total ((4650+139.50)/100)*3=.....
If you continue to follow this process of adding the previous year plus interest you will get to the total of 8 years.

When it comes to dividing by fractions the most simple way is to just remember "Flip and Multiply"....so (3/4) / (1/6) can also be looked at as (3/4) * (6/1).....multiply across giving (18/4) or (9/2)

By rearranging you can solve for A^2 or A (would be opposite procedure for B^2/B).......A^2 + B^2 = 85^2.....subtract B^2 from both sides leaving us with A^2 = 85^2 - B^2 after that square root it all to give us...A = sqrt(85^2 - B^2).....without more information it is not possible to come up with exact digits for A or B just rearrangements that solve for A or for B.
