Different calcs work differently I do not know of any standardized meaning of what +/- means.

If someone uses a tool in a test it is up to them to understand the nuances of the tool. Tell your student this and tell him to use (-9)^2.  That has a specifically defined meaning.

Keep chipping away at it.....new stuff is always a bit confusing at first , but it will become easier.   I didn't do very well in math in my early years, but eventually things 'clicked' and I graduated with honors from engineering school with little effort.

gave me a little head ache! (: but yes, even though it is longer, when you added the extra step, it helps! i have an IEP.. and so umm, i cannot grasp things as fast as the avrage students, sadly. :(

i = sqrt(-1)

sqrt(-72) = sqrt(9 x 8 x (-1))  =  sqrt(9x4x2x(-1)) = 3(2) i sqrt2 = 6i sqrt2

Maybe with an extra step it will be clearer:

sqrt(-72) = sqrt(9 x 8 x (-1)) = sqrt (9 x 4 x 2 x (-1))  =   sqrt(9) sqrt(4) sqrt(2) sqrt(-1)       (remeber  sqrt(-1) = i)

                                                                                  = (3)     x     (2) x  sqrt(2) x  i

                                                                                  = 6 i sqrt 2

Melody, I cannot find any calculator in my house or phone that does this this way....I understand what you are saying, but I think the calculator has a weird syntax glitch in this instance

When I want to find the SQUARE of NEGATIVE 9    I should be able to enter the following keys  '9'  ' +-'  and then the x^2 key to get 81    not -81       Currently to get the correct answer you have to enter (   9  +-  )  then the x^2 key...I under stand how to do it on this calculator, but other calculators do not do it in this manner......and it led one of our students to get an incorrect answer using the quadratic equation to solve the equation she mentions above....

still a bit confusing, but ill keep on trying! Thanks!

Do you see the suttle, but real difference?

I'm not trying to SUBTRACT a square, I'm trying to get a square of a NEGATIVE

-9 is interpreted correctly as -1×9

-9^2= -1×9^2 = -1×81 = -81

However

(-9)^2=(-1×9)×(-1×9)=+81

If it did it your way then

10 - 3^2 would equal 10 +9  which is obviously nonesense.
