SOMETIMES when the quadratic equation is 'easy' like this one , you can just factor it like the guest 1 did......(unless you are specificallly ASKED to use the quadratic formula)...other times it may not be so easy to factor them out and you will HAVE to use the quadratic formula to get the answer(s)   like   x^2 +53x - 20 = 0    (I do not know the answers to this...I just made it up as an example of when you would have to use the quad formula)

If you have to solve it using the quad formula

you are doing it correctly

-2  +- sqrt(4-4)   divided by 2   equals (  -2 +- 0) / 2    right?

equals  -2/2 = -1     right???      you are working it correctly.....   Hayley?

Solve for x:
x^2+2 x+1 = 0

Write the left hand side as a square:
(x+1)^2 = 0

Take the square root of both sides:
x+1 = 0

Subtract 1 from both sides:
Answer: | 
| x = -1

The easiest way to do it, is to break the number in question into its PRIME factors:

sqrt(-72)=sqrt(2 X 2 X 2 X 3 X 3 X -1). Now, for every pair of numbers you have INSIDE the bracket, select one of them OUTSIDE the bracket. So, we take one 2 X one 3=6. Out of three 2's, that leaves one 2 INSIDE the bracket. And, since sqrt(-1)=i, then we have: 6i sqrt(2).

Agreed,   that is what we did    ...and I explained it to them.    ...and I WAS referring to her quadratic equation problem...that is where we found what I will continue to call an 'anomoly'       ha!     Thanx

sqrt(-45) =  sqrt(9 x 5 x (-1))  =  sqrt(9)sqrt(5)sqrt(-1) = 3  x  sqrt(5)  x i   = 3i sqrt(5)
