We would need to have some sort of equation, here. Also, we would need to know the value of "x," or we would just have one equation with two unknowns.

You cannot find m because there is no equal sign.  Even if there was an equal sign I think you would need more information because there are 2 unknowns.

Sally, you should try to understand all of these answers.

If you can understand how algebraic and graphing solutions work side by side it will make a lot of things more easily understood.

It is an important conceptual step I think.

Here's the graph that confirms the answer....the "red" is y= x^2 and the "blue" is y =4. Note that x^2 is less than 4 on the interval from -2 to 2 (not including the endpoints!!)

Zero is an even number.

An even number is a number that can be divided by 2 with no remainder.

0 ÷ 2 = 0

There's no remainder, so zero is even.

Like CPhill said, Wikipedia explains that zero is even.

Let's move everything to the left side and distribute the two

x^2 -2x-8>0

(x-4)(x+2)>0

We can see that the two zeroes are at x=4 and x=-2, neither of which are solutions!  They are important because we can use them to determine what segment(s) of the number line contain our solution set.  Let's try testing 3 numbers, one that is greater than our two zeroes, one that is less than our two zeroes, and one that is between our zeroes.  

Greater than: I'll choose x=1000 because it will make it easy to determine if our inequality holds.  Note that when you substitute a large number like this it makes both factors of our quadratic positive, which guarantees our inequality is true. 

Between: I choose x=0 because it is easy to calculate. (0-4)(0+2)>0 is equivalent to -8>0 which is clearly false.

Less than: let's pick a big negative number.  It really does not matter what it is but when we select any large negative number we get two negative facts which result in a positive produce which guarantees our inequality is satisfied

Therefore our solution set is x>4 or x<-2

Jboy is right on, the slope is 3. If it helps you picture this, here's a graph:

The slope is 3, or 3/1, meaning that when we go up 3 we have to go over 1, and you can see this on the graph.

There actually should be two arrows at the where the red line cuts off at the edges of the paper, indicating that it will go on forever in both directions.
