In a high school, there are 90 seniors, 142 juniors, 175 sophomores and 218 freshmen. There are 30 places for student council. Assign a number of seats proportional to each class.
Any help and an explanation would be great, thanks.
Add up ALL the students=90 + 142 +175 +218=625 total number of students.
Next you find the percentage of each group: 90/625*30, 142/625*30, 175/625*30, 218/625*30
So we get 4 seniors + 7 juniors + 8 sophomores + 11 freshmen=30 places on the student council.
We had to round off some numbers because of fractional percentages.
