1 Adult ticket and 2 student tickets costs $7.

How much does each kind of ticket cost?

Let x be the price of a student ticket and y be the price of an adult ticket.....and we have

3x + 2y = 12

2x +  y  =   7    which implies that   y = 7 - 2x...........subbing this into the first equation, we have

3x + 2 [ 7 - 2x]  = 12  simplify

3x + 14 - 4x  =  12

-x  + 14 = 12        add x to both sides and subtract 12 from both sides

x = 2       the price of the student ticet is $2

And using  y = 7 - 2x, the price of the adult ticket  is : 7 - 2(2)   =  7 - 4 = $3

Here's a "mathematical" solution......let the digits of the number be a and b, in that order.....and we have

[10a + b] mod 5  = 2   (1)         and          a + b = 6   (2)

Manipulating (2), we have

 b = 6 - a

Subbing this into (1), we have

[10a + 6 - a] mod 5  = 2

[9a + 6] mod 5 = 2     (3)

(9a mod 5 + 6 mod 5 )  = 2

9a mod 5  + 1   = 2    subtract 1 from both sides

Work out the average speed Raksha must drive at from Ganby to Horton

Since Raksha is driving at 40MPH, when she leaves Fulbeck, that means she will cover the of distance of 10 miles from Fulbeck to Granby in:

But, she needs to cover the distance from Granby to Horton in 10:35-10:15=20 minutes.

So to travel 18 from Granby to Horton in 20 minutes, she must average:

For some reason modular arithmetic and diophantine equations have caught my imagination for the moment.  Probably because they do not seem that difficult but I have only had very recent experience with them.

I love answering your questions. I would of answered this one earlier but it got lost. I thought I saw it but then I could not find it.     

Points S and T are on side CD of rectangle ABCD such that AS and AT trisect angle DAB . If CT=3 and DS=6, then what is the area of ABCD?

Here is the diagram. I answered it just  from a rough sketch but i wanted to check it was correct so I draw it to scale. :)

 DS is given as 6 units and TC is given as 3 units, ST is not given.

The LaTex function is not working so I will have to do it by hand.

tan 30 = DS/H = 6/H

1/sqrt3 = 6/H

H=6sqrt3

tan60 = DT/H

sqrt3 = (6+ST)/6sqrt3

6*3=6+ST

18=6+ST

12=ST

so

DC=6+12+3 = 21

Area = AD * DC

Area = 6sqrt3 * 21

Area = 126 sqrt3      units squared.
