f(-3)  ....this says to go to x = -3 and read off the associated y value......at x = -3, f(x)  = y  = -1

f^-1(1)......note, we are looking for the x value on f(x) where y = 1........this is found at x = 0   ....so the point (0,1)  is on f(x)....then, the point (1,0) is on the inverse which is the same as f^-1(1)

The domain  of the inverse will = the range of the original function......this is the span of y values covered by the original function =  [ - 3, 3 ] .....note that -3 and 3 are both included in the domain of f^-1

[  4x-5] / [ 3x], solve for x

Solve for x:
(4 x-5)/(3 x) = 0

Multiply both sides by 3:
(4 x-5)/x = 0

Multiply both sides by x:
4 x-5 = 0

Add 5 to both sides:
4 x = 5

Divide both sides by 4:
Answer: |x = 5/4

40 - 15 =25 remaining cards.

25 x 2/5 =10 cards were sent on Friday.

25 -10 =15 remaining cards, which were sent on Saturday.

That really depends on how you define "computer".

(f/g)(x) = f(x)/g(x) = (4x - 5) / 3x

If it needs to be simplified then:

(4/3)x - 5 / 3x

on holiday ellie bought 40 cards

she sent 3/8 of them on Wednesday

So if she sent 3/8, then they would be multiplied by the number of cards: 40:

40 * 3/8 = 15

2/5 of the remaining ones on friday

Again, this is multiplication:

15 * 2/5 = 6

I think that mathematician already knows this but to say that a number is irrational so therefore, by definition, the digits must go on for ever without a repetitive pattern, offers no explanation of why this is so.

Mathematician is just toying with ideas in a way that I think all mathematicians and potential mathematicians must. Only people with good analytical brains do this.  

I think that many/most people just accept everything that they are told - assuming that they are told by a source that they consider credible.

I had heard about the spigot formula before. It is definitely an interesting formula.

Did you know that you could compute the Nth hexadecimal digit of Pi efficiently without the previous N-1 digits. For example: the 10^50th digit of pi. The method is based on this formula:
