One way to find the vertex of a parabola is to use the formula:  x  =  -b / (2a).

An explanation why this works can be found at:  http://hotmath.com/hotmath_help/topics/vertex-of-a-parabola.html

For the equation:  y  =  2x2 + 4x + 7

  a  =  2, b = 4, and c = 7   --->   x-value  =  -b / (2a)  =  -4/(2·2)  =  -4/4  =  -1

To find the y-value, place this value for x back into the equation:  y  =  2(-1)2 + 4(-1) + 7  =  5

So the vertex is  (-1, 5)
