Melody's formula will work. Be careful though that you calculate

[((common area/2)+your area)/ (total square footage)]  x  rent and not

[(common area/(2+your area))/ (total square footage)]  x  rent

It is a common mistake for people to make

thank u CPhill and melody for ur great answers ! CPhill after reading ur answer very carefully i could easily understand it , u ver right melody . CPhill i just wanted to say one thing that in this part 9=(1/8)x , i couldnt understand the method as i have learnt the method of cross multiplication so this method just popped up in my head and so i did it and the answer came correct and i could understand ! thank u melody for taking the initiative to make me understand and give another method ! thumbs up for bothof u ! thanks !

1) common area footage

2)your area footage

3)roommate's area footage

To figure your share, it's just...

[(common area/2+your area)/ (total square footage)]  x  rent

And your roommate's share is just

[(common area/2+roommate's area)/ (total square footage)]  x  rent

Remember that a cube number is a number that is multiplied by itself 3 times. In this case, the answer is 20 because:

1 + 2 = 3

You are adding one to two, which is one plus one. Thus, one plus one plus one is three.

Just divide the numerator by the denominator.

Okay GoldenLeaf - this is one place that you went wrong.  I have not checked your whole answer.

$$1z - 8/z - 5z - 38/11 * 1z$$

$$z(1z - 8/z - 5z - 38/11 * 1z)$$

The second one does not follow from the first!

$$z(1z-\frac{8}{z}-5z - \frac{38}{11} * 1z)
=z^2-8-5z^2- \frac{38z^2}{11}$$

Sorry, i can't answer your second question.

We don't really need to know how much water is in the bowl or high high the tank is.

the metal cubes will take up $$4\times 15^3=13500cm^3$$

I will assume that 40cm is the height of the tank - the question should have stated this.

The surface area ofthe water is $$50\times 30 = 1500cm^2$$

$${\frac{{\mathtt{13\,500}}}{{\mathtt{1\,500}}}} = {\mathtt{9}}$$

The water will rise 9cm

On the site calc

6 divided by pi is entered as

6/pi 

then press return and you will have your answer - Or at least a very close approximation.

say your question is 6 divided by pi,

On the site calc you can just type in 6/pi and press return.

It does it for you.  It's pretty cool that way!

If you just wanted a good estimate for pi, type in pi the hit return.
