I think you have that backwards. Tangent is opposite over adjacent and inverse tangent would be adjacent over opposite.

But he probably means how to do it on the calculator.

Do that by clicking on the 2nd button and it will say atan which means arc tan and that is for when you need the angle of the ratio of the opposite over adjacent.

That is different than inverse tangent though.

I just know very basic trigonometry, but if normal tangent is opposite over adjacent side, I would guess inverse tangent would be adjacent over opposite side.
