If you have a graphing calculator, such as a TI-83 or TI-84, this is very easy to solve. First, simply solve for y:
y + 2 = -1/4(x - 1)
Subtract 2 from both sides:
y = -1/4(x - 1) - 2
Press the " Y = " button on the calculator.
Enter: -0.25 ( x - 1 ) - 2 into Y1.
Press the " Graph " button.
Press the " 2nd " button.
Press the " Trace " button.
Press 2.
Press the left-arrow key until the cursor on the screen moves clearly to the left of the x-intercept of the line.
Press the " Enter " button.
Press the right-arrow key until the cursor on the screen moves clearly to the right of the x-intercept of the line.
Press the " Enter " button.
Press the " Enter " button again.
Your answer for x will come up on the bottom of the screen.
Now, take your answer for x and substitute it in to the original equation, and then solve for y.
There's your answer!
