If x=-sqrt(2) (-sqrt(2)), Then x=2

When you ask "what is the value of the expression", do you actually want the "numerical value" of the your expression? If that is so, then we sustitute 2 for every x in the expression, and we get:

2^3 - 2^2 - 3 + 1=8 - 4 -3 + 1=-1 + 1=0. Good Luck.

(1/2)[4*sqrt(5)] - (1/2)[3*sqrt(5)]  =      factor out the (1/2)

(1/2) [4sqrt(5) - 3sqrt(5)] =

Note......  [sqrt(2)]^2  =  sqrt(2) * sqrt(2)  = 2     [ not 4 ]

And

[sqrt(2)]^3  =  sqrt(2) * sqrt(2) * sqrt(2)  =  2*sqrt(2)

-2sqrt(2) - 2 + 3 sqrt(2) + 1  =

sqrt(2)  - 1

We could only do that if we had this :

[x^2 * -3x] / [x^2  * 1 ] = 2     →   -3x = 2

To see why we can't do what you suggest....let's look at this, instead

[7 - 2] / [ 7  + 5]      if we "crossed out" the "7s" ???   ....we would end up with  -2/5

But.......

[7 - 2] / [7 + 5]   = 5/12      and that's not -2/5

Thus....the rule is....we can cancel multiplication on top and bottom, but not addition/subtraction

Does that make sense ???

Plus....look at what would be  your solution....x = -2/3....see if that works in the original problem.....[it won't   !!! ]

x^2 +3x +2=0, then we factor it into:

(x +2) (x +1)=0, so that,

x=-1 and x=-2

(x^2-3x)/(x^2+1)=2     multiply both sides by x^2 + 1

x^2 - 3x   = 2(x^2 + 1)   simplify

x^2 - 3x  = 2x^2 + 2    subtract x^2   and add  3x to both sides

0 = x^2 + 3x + 2       factor

(x + 1) ( x+ 2) = 0      and setting each factor to 0, we have that x =  - 1 or x = - 2

The correct answer should be 4 NOT 2 that CPhill got. He used $70 charge for "Essence of Yoga" instead of $80 per month. But the Math is right. Just a simple mistake.

and so it is 16 1/4-17 sixteen one fourths minus seventeen. I want to understand how they got the answer -0.75, thank you for the reply though.

-1  + 1/4  =

-3/4

Here's a second way

17  = 68/4

16 + 1/4   =  65/4   ....so....

65/4  - 68/4    =

-3/4

Either

-4d + 6  = 12                        or                   -4d + 6 = -12

                      subtract 6 from both sides

-4d  = 6                                                       -4d   = -18

                     divide both sides by -4

  d = -3/2                              or                    d = -18/-4   =  9/2
