Hi everybody,

Great answers today were forthcoming from NinjaDevo, Takahiro Maeda. Jboy314, CPhill, Rosala, Heureka, Alan and Kitty

There is not much to report today. One nice little thing is that each day I notice the little improvements that Andre is still doing to the forum.  For instance;

(1) The messages are displaying better.  Line breaks are being included properly.    

(2) The attention icons in the body of the forum are displaying in the right place.  For a while they were not.

That is all I can remember at the moment.  There are probably a lot of other little things as well,  I am not a very observant person.  Thank you for all the improvements Andre.     ♬

Yeah...I knew that "trick," too.....I just wanted to try a different approach..but yours is definitely preferable !!!   Just like the balloon......the amount of "hot air" on the forum tends to expand in a "cubic" fashion.....sometimes......

Ninja, you gave a great explanation as always but you forgot your units (2) and you were out by just a little because you did not use enough decimal places for pi.

Rounding errors always get compounded so you have to be careful not to round more than necessary until the very end.  

We have

V = (4/3)*pi*r^3

71 = (4/3) *pi * r^3    Solving for r , we have

71(3/4)/pi  = r^3         Taking the cube root of both sides, we have

r = 2.5687583235794156      And if the design is now 10cm wide, the dimensions of the balloon must have doubled....so doubling the radius, we have  2 * 2.5687583235794156 = 5.1375166471588312

So

V = (4/3)*pi * (5.1375166471588312)*3   = 567.99999cm^3 or  568cm^3

Obviously, Melody's path to the answer is more elegant than mine !!!

I think if a length dimension is 2*original then the volume is 2cubed=8 times original.

I'm another mathematician will look at my answer.

To find the lateral surface area of a cylinder, we can use the formula:

height*circumference

and to find the circumference, we can use:

diameter*pi                   ---Note: this could also be 2 times radius times pi. It's saying the same thing.

So really, our equation to find the lateral surface area of a cylinder is 

height*diameter*pi

Let's plug in our numbers:

45*14*3.14

1978.2

round up to a whole number

1978 cm

I'd use this method beause it's really simple to just plug in three numbers and solve the question. :)

The lowest common denominator is 70 so mult everything by 70
